That argument might fly in cases of actual fraud. Not on mere suspicion, especially if the transaction turns out to be legitimate.
At the very least, if there is suspicion, they ought to contact the passenger or cardholder ahead of time. Not at the last minute at the airport.
We once had a visitor coming from overseas on AC, who does not believe in credit cards and lives in a cash world. She had her ticket paid for by her brother. She also was asked to verify the credit card issue at the airport. Good thing that she was able to call her brother who confirmed.
It's not the right way to deal with mere suspicion. Waiting until the last minute with no advance warning is just plain wrong. And stupid.
