This is a dreadful system -- when traveling on two PNRs, we were unable to change my companion's seat to be next to mine (I had a lap infant in the record). I saw a different seatmap from what she saw when we checked in online. I couldn't tell -- and nor could the checkin agent -- whether the occupied seat next to mine was actually occupied or merely blocked as extra space for the lap infant. I suspected as much, and it was indeed the case.
This new system wasted about 15 minutes of several checkin reps' time (this on BA's flagship route LHR-JFK and from their main hub). They couldn't even perform the simple task of changing my traveling companion's seat. In addition, showing differing information on a seat map to passengers is understandable in cases of different elite status, but that wasn't the case here -- and anyhow, I'd think it sensible for the checkin agent to be able to see the actual situation for themselves.
