Stories like this are pretty common. I don't understand why companies don't use a public cloud where scaling is not an issue. Azure/AWS, etc. I'm assuming a few things but if your company had chosen to use something of that nature it would not have happened.

One company I worked at had their Azure account hacked and the hackers used their servers to DDoS for a week before they realized lol lol lol. Microsoft originally was going to refund them for the DDoS usage but then they decided not to because DDoSing is against the ToS
