wrigleyville - I concur with your opinion of the FS Berlin, my favorite major-city hotel in Europe. The description of your room sounds like the one I had (by chance, were you on the 7th or 8th floor, for a good view of the Gendarmenmarkt)?

Oddly, as in your case, the only blip in an otherwise perfect stay also involved the concierge. Because my ticket was waiting at the box office, I called to verify the start time at the Staatsoper - the concierge told me 19:30, so I took my time getting ready. I arrived at 18:55, only to discover that the curtain was going up in five minutes! If it had been longer than a two-block walk I could have missed the first half of the performance.

Was Vau one of the restaurants you tried to get into?
