I have experienced this when flying out of HKG to YVR via CX.
Another instance is when I booked my parents from TPE to YVR via BR.
I have to take a scanned copy of credit card and send it to their email to verify it.
I didn't know about this.. they didn't allow my parents to board until they've seen the card. whew!

It's very clear on their web site though. Not sure if using a TA. In that case presumably the TA should warn? Or is the requirement waived?
