Keep calling. A 24 hour schedule change is cause of them to waive the change fees for the outbound. Ask for a supervisor if you don't get the answer you need.
Alternatively you should be able to cancel without fee due to the sched change - check if you can rebook the flights at the same price on the new dates and just cancel and reboot, although the upgrade does complicate this unless there's R space still available...
