Since UA seems to be compelling me to take an additional vacation day, which I could have done originally, I'd prefer to head out on Saturday or Sunday.

First UA agent informed me that UA will only adjust original reservation by plus or minus one day, and states that change fee is $300 per ticket plus current ticket costs.

Second UA agent says the same, but that change fee is $450 per ticket.

3 questions:

In a situation where UA made the original change, is it reasonable for them to not be flexible about rescheduling my outbound? (It approximately doesn't matter to them.)

Second, what's the deal on change fees? I can't find anywhere written down what the change fee was at the time of booking.

Third, what would you do in my situation?

Thanks.
The change fees are not hidden. You actually agreed to them when you bought an advance purchase, restricted ticket, although most people don't read the fine print. You are definitely allowed to request a full refund with a major change like that, though. Have you checked out other options yourself for the date of travel you want. The upgrade you got on United may not be available (or more miles) on alternate carriers. Maybe ask about re-routing via NRT on original day?
