Interesting observation and likely a good one.
The difference is, the company holds our Aeroplan miles and profiles "hostage"
We fly Air Canada and whatever partners and our miles are deposited in the Aeroplan Bank. We may buy stuff that also earns miles that are deposited in the same bank. But our miles are held in accounts that we cannot access for major parts of the day on some days.
I must be the only one who sees a problem with this business model.
