OP - I live in ATL and can tell you this from experience. There is zero chance anyone in ATL will help you with your request absent you paying the change fee and fare difference on the spot. It is not even worth trying as the IT will not allow any employee to "gratis" make this change.
If you also skip any segment of the DL itinerary the system will automatically cancel the remaining legs. Again, there are no exceptions to this policy (except in extreme cases where the airline or weather causes a delay/cancellation).
