After I arrived in Canada on Tuesday, at the first restaurant I ate at in Quebec City, I was handed a hand-held device to complete the transaction (insert PIN / verify total / add tip.)
I inserted my card after the waitress had already input the total, and there screen said "purchase amount $28.54." There were 4 soft function buttons beneath the screen, the first read "CAN," the second and third were blank, and the fourth read "OK."
I hadn't paid attention to what my bill total was, but I knew I wanted to be billed in Canadian dollars, so I very smugly hit the "CAN" key.
And then the transaction was CANceled.
I could see the restraint as the waitress tried not to roll her eyes.
My bill was, indeed, C$28.54 and there was no option to select currency on the machine because there was no DCC involved.
I've been to over 40 countries and my neighbor to the north was the one that made me look like an idiot!
