Either one works fine, printed QR or PDF on the phone. It is just a matter of presenting it to the scanner at a resolution it can read or a size that fits.

The warning is addressed to people who do not care or know how to zoom in the barcode on the PDF.

Personally I always print when able because my cellphone battery can sense when I approach a gate, and usually decides to call it a day at that point.
