The printed boarding pass PDFs are not supposed to be scanned from your phone, and the phone boarding passes are not supposed to be printed out. I would expect that the message is explicitly telling you that you should not display the printed boarding pass on your phone.

The printed boarding passes look more like a barcode, and the phone boarding passes look more like a QR code (but are not actually a QR code).
