I book through Concur for all of my flights. I can always select seats and request upgrades immediately after booking on Concur even though there is a message at the top of the AA reservation page that says that the flight is not yet ticketed. I also can put in all of my traveler information.

The seat selections I make on AA.com are reflected in Concur pretty quickly as well. I'm not sure if it's instantaneous, but IME the next time I go to my trip in Concur my AA.com seat selections are there.

When I was a UA flier though, it was my experience that I could not select seats until the flight was ticketed.
