So, I just checked in for the afternoon BA flight to LHR. The agent took one look at my suit carrier and said "you can't check that in". Not because it's too fragile (it has quite a few previous barcode stickers on it), but because it's too light. Apparently they get complaints from the airport when they accept items lighter than 5kg She asked whether I could move something from my suitcase or backpack. Unfortunately the only heavy items I have are my laptop and camera, so consequently I am now grappling with two carry-ons.

I've seen people re-packing at check-in many times over the years, but never to make a bag heavier !
