So you can operate the controls before stepping in, and check the water temperature.
I don't have a problem with them (rather a half-door than a clingy shower curtain) but they need to account to variation in heights. I'm 6'1" and usually, the water leakage is down to the fact that I have to angle the shower head so that I'm not ducking underneath.
