Don't you have some insurance included in your credit cards?
For exemple, I have a Visa Premier card, and it includes (through Europ Assistance) medical emergency - evacuation insurance and refund of expenses you can have up to 155,000EUR.
I used it recently and although the handling wasn't perfect in the end it made its work.
Same in South Africa, up to R10m (about 600k eur) up to 90 days per trip if booked with credit card.
