I guess most members here are from the US, so I don't know how it is there.
Don't you have some insurance included in your credit cards?
For exemple, I have a Visa Premier card, and it includes (through Europ Assistance) medical emergency - evacuation insurance and refund of expenses you can have up to 155,000EUR.
I used it recently and although the handling wasn't perfect in the end it made its work.
