Be aware that BA have contracted out ground handling at AMS amongst other places and they are under pressure to reduce hand baggage when flights are busy.
I guess what I am really saying is they are less aware of competing issues / status or just less fussed about making it right for the passenger.
Ah, okay. I didn't know that, but it certainly explains the staff's attitude in that situation.
