CC - thanks! I must admit some (or much) of your response is greek to me, and I have a lot to learn about fare classes. But as you probably suspect most are my fares are simple, and booked through a TA, so the opportunity to upfare like this is presumably never (rarely?) available. Well, you could break mine into two cases.
The first is essentially like buying separate A-B and B-C tickets, where a combined A-C (via B) ticket in J was about the same price. But I didn't intentionally book separate fares, it was just my lack of attention.
The second is just me not really looking at fares on that route, so the cost of a mid-Flex wasn't much less than a low-J.
