I would advise caution in paying ones own travel on business, check with HMRC, as you potentially have to pay tax on the reimbursed costs, then claim that back via self assessment.
Not in a typical employed, salaried situation. One pays for one's travel, one submits details of the travel to the employer in line with whatever policy they have (which must be within HMRC policies, of course), and one receives reimbursement directly from the employer. It does not go through the payroll, as it is not pay, it is reimbursement of costs.
