Taking a UK rental car to any foreign country (includes Ireland) is a rubbish idea. Lots of extra fees and mandatory additional insurances.
Fly across or (if you want to save money) the coach/ferry service from Glasgow to Belfast is really cheap. A few rental companies allow cross border within the island of Ireland for no fee.
