Booking Rail Travel in the UK

Is it just me or is it very hard to book rail travel in the UK? I have been trying to book a trip to York airport from LGW and run into all kinds of problems. I wanted to travel to York and return only as far as Kings Cross. It turns out that I have to use multiple railroads and in most cases the companies will only mail tickets to UK addresses.

More recently I have tried to book a one way ticket for four adults from York to London on November 30 and when using Railtrack it will only price out extremely expensive tickets (100+ GBP and up). Can anyone recommend an easy to use site that will allow a user from the US to book tickets and have them mailed to him? Thanks
