I'm an AA EXP and I was able to pick the economy comfort section or exit row seats for free - does that sound right? Browsing through the AY website I saw oneworld sapphires and emeralds could pick their seats by calling, but I had no issues on the website.
I don't remember having to call in many times as a lowly AA Plat. It's a pretty decent perk. Enjoy the champagne (emerald benefit in Y)!
