This is what I tried, as well. It's good to learn what you can, but definitely be prepared for the (japanese) signage to be incomprehensible without at least some Kanji knowledge.

My first time to Japan was also staying at the Conrad. It can be tricky to figure out the walking path from Shinbashi to Conrad. I was _very_ tired, and much delayed by the time we got that far, and I was pretty stressed out at that point. On subsequent visits, I learned to expect a certain amount of confusion and getting lost, and it made things a ton better for me.
