OK, I just looked it up and see that the end of Soviet rule was 1989. I know with some certainty that I was there in 1993 as I was living in London at the time. I visited a number of places in my last months there, knowing it would be more difficult once I returned to the US. I stayed in a charming small hotel that had been used for diplomatic guests by the St Charles Bridge.
