I know, but the substantial difference in RDMs means that I'd only get $250 worth of RDMs instead of $1,300. Throw in the changes to upgrade priority and emphasis on EQDs, and it's probably not worth chasing status anymore.
How do you calculate $1300 worth of redeemable miles from $1328 tickets? Or even $250 on the new scheme? At first I doubted these numbers, but here's how I got roughly the same estimates. If we guess that the actual fare before taxes is $1200 for example, 11 times that for EXP earnings gives about 13,200 miles, which would be worth approximately $250 at two cents per mile. If we estimate 8,000 miles as the distance between NYC and HKG, four one way flights would be 32,000 miles. Double that for EXP gives 64,000 miles, or about $1300 at two cents per mile.
So under the old scheme, the only cost of doing this to equality for EXP was your time. Now it costs you over a thousand dollars net in "real" money.
