There was no cost. The “hand slap” was more of a scolding than anything.

Do keep in mind that third-party insurance for the car is compulsory in Mozambique; but you can purchase it right there at the border crossing for 150 South African rand — and you will be approached to purchase it.

You really do not need to purchase the visa to Mozambique in advance, according to my experience — but if it does give you peace of mind, then I suppose it is worth the extra $78.00...

...but if you do change your mind and decide to purchase your visa at the border crossing, ensure that your dollar bills are as new as possible — preferably within the past five years or so, as currency from 1999 was considered to be “too old”.
