With the announcement of the new AAdvantage rules starting 2017 I was wondering how I could now keep my PLT status with the $6K spend requirement. At least half of my miles come from personal travel vs biz.

I was considering BOS-HKG 1/1/17 returning 1/3/17 in J. Not cheap I know but the thought of doing this in Y is not good. I have done Y before to Asia (PVG and HK). Now that I'm older and have tasted J several times, I have less tolerance for Y.

I have never done anything like this. If I did it, I know any family/friends that found out would think I was nuts. (they don't understand us FT's) I have no idea about logistics. No Visa is required, correct? Any issues with HK customs when you tell them you're only there for 18 hrs?

AA has a flight from DFW that gets in 1/2 about 6:30pm. They have a return flight on 1/3 at 2:20 pm. Is there a hotel near the airport or would I have to venture into the city for what amounts to a few hours?

The J ticket would pretty much cover the spend requirement for the year. I would net ~38K EQM based on the 2x for J class.

I would appreciate any thoughts and guidance maybe from someone that has done this.
