TL/DR: Yes, have a Govt ID with you.
I also travel frequently to the DC area, as well as many other places and have been asked for Govt ID just once. That was at a Marriott in Fort Lauderdale where I have zero status. Hilton and Hyatt have never asked me for Govt ID, but of course YMMV.
