At near 100 billion in revenue for 2015 WF would probably see even several million as not enough to bother with putting in the infrastructure to identify and plug the rewards abuse
It wouldn't surprise me if the changes were either triggered by the "go far" rewards system overhaul a couple of months ago or maybe MS was the inspiration to tinker with the program
