Problem with Delta choice gift card

Hi everybody!
Iīm looking for some piece of advice with a silly problem that is driving me very frustrated.
Long story short, my husband and me were volunteers to give away our seats in a flight and we were offered 700 USD each as compensation, which was great. The gate agent asked us if we lived in the US, we said "yes, but we will be away for some months", and she replied "not a problem you will receive a gift card that last a year". We filled the online form and received the confirmation that we would receive a 700 USD gift card. When we returned to the US several months later we opened our envelopes and found out that we didnīt receive one 700 USD gift card, but several of lower denominations (which are harder to use) but also they were already expired! We received them in September and they expired the following April, only 7 months, not the year that we were told.
I called amex and they said that I had lost the money because those werenīt "gift cards" (those funds donīt expire) but "reward cards".
It has been a long time since that original flight so I donīt know if I should contact Delta. They only offer a phone number, which I hate because I prefer to send an email, but maybe I will give it a try.
Do you have any advice of how handling this? Any idea of how can I contact them through email? Did I just lose 1400 dollars ?
