SFOtraveler,
Our 4 night stay at the Opus in August was so very different from the experiences described by jkc22 and globeflyerca that I’m going to respond to some of the comments they’ve made.
First, a little personal background. We are men in our mid-thirties, travel frequently and generally prefer smaller hotels with a contemporary atmosphere and a central location. We don’t seek out “gay” places specifically but we do prefer hotels with a bit of an urban edge. We live in the heart of Boston. In New York we’ve stayed at a couple of the Shrager hotels (Royalton and Hudson) and the W Times Square mentioned in previous posts-- we usually stay at 60 Thompson.
The Opus is a small hotel and it’s true that services in the hotel are quite limited— a tiny bar and one bistro/restaurant (which we did not try). But the staff was friendly, not snobby, and housekeeping was excellent. Our room was immaculate.
The Yaletown neighborhood is young and vibrant and more than compensates for the limited services available in the Opus. There are dozens of shops, galleries, restaurants and cafes within 10 minutes walk. The hotel arranged for us to use a local health club with excellent workout facilities. We rented bicycles and rode everywhere in the city with ease.
Vancouver is a great city and I expect you’ll enjoy your time there wherever you stay. We loved the Opus and can’t wait to go back.
