Calling NH probably won't help (unless I want to pay the change fee and difference in fare, which is substantial). I wonder if UA would be willing to move me to a flight the night before? If they do not, and I misconnect, they'll have to get me to HKG which is a lot more expensive for them, presumably?

Can they do that on another carrier's ticket? Should I even try? Or am I stuck rolling the dice and waiting?

UA may be able to do it. UA has a weather waiver for Houston, I believe, due to the storms.

What is the origin city? If there are alternates that are open, you may just want to roll with it and get rebooked out of there.
