I'm gonna guess that the flight crew (attendants) were at FAA maximums. I'm no expert, but I believe if the door is shut, the countdown to illegal stops, if the door is open, they are unusable which provided another replacement crew was not available, would have cncld the flight. This is my theory without any real knowledge other than what the OP described.
