3 Minutes to load full flight?

I was on a flight Thursday evening, 6-2 from MCO to TUL via IAH. IAH was on hold due to the flooding, no flights in or out. So our already late flight was looking very doubtful. We appreciated they didn't want to load us until there was some hope of getting to IAH, so we waited.

Finally realized that the Club was still open and went in for a drink. They announced in the club that our flight was suddenly boarding. We paused for a moment or two and then left our drinks half finished. We were in group 1 and they were already boarding group 3, we cut the line; wouldn't normally but wanted to get it over with.

As we were sitting, the FA announced we had 3 minutes left to get everyone on. After about 4 minutes they shut the door. A significant number of people were left on the jet way!! They nearly cut one family in two! Really glad we cut the line. Does this sort of thing happen very frequently?

Finally reached IAH and sat on the tarmac for about an hour waiting on a gate, then about 10 more minutes at the gate waiting for ground crew to work the jet way.

Given all this I would have expected grumpy employees all around. Everyone we encountered, from GA's to FA's to the guy at the desk in the club, all were pleasant and helpful.

I have learned the value of Group 1 boarding! Was I wrong to elbow our way into group 3?
