I don't have issue with your view, Will. My concern was your original message did give an impression as though every Canadian feels this way. As a Canadian, I do not feel your opinion accurately reflects mine in this case. It probably wasn't what you meant but it was the impression you gave, and to that, I was uncomfortable but nothing more.
The Governments are passive by nature when it comes to human rights. Because often, these issues are controversial and they prefer not to act if possible. Even though the Canadian Government has become very supportive of gay rights, it doesn't mean it enjoys the heat being put on its back from Anti-Human Rights groups. For example this issue of what constitutes a family accross the U.S./Canada border should have been dealt with ever since the common-law defintion of spouses changed back in 2000 (Canada). That's 3 years from now already. Yet, the Canadian Government has failed to react or take steps to clarify with the U.S. Government regarding this important question that can affect a lot of people everyday. Then they wonder why there are backlogs in the borders? I can post other articles here but I will simply sum up what these two men have asked, as they told the press, <<Please clarify your policies and make them consistent.>> That's it and that's all. Don't let people pass as a family on one day then come back the next time and tell them you have to fill 2 forms. I remember reading reports here that people of same-sex have used one form to enter the U.S. as well, so obviously, this is not an isolated case. Whatever they decide, it has to be consistent accross the board or else you could be find fault for unfairly discriminating some people.
And why it always takes someone to go public before the Governments start to react is beyond me. If it weren't for these two, the next people who would have to go through this hassle may be you. At least, with this case now becoming public, everyone would be prepared mentally and knows what to expect. Hopefully, the Governments will now sort it out and travel will be less hassle. But say nothing, do nothing, then you'll get nothing.
