You and me both, brother. I'd much rather enjoy a nice kare raisu or bowl of ramen and save a boatload of dough. A really nice meal is nice occasionally but I'd never do that more than once a trip.
Yes, I tend to save my ventures into hardcore traditional Japanese cuisine for times when clients are paying, when I'm out on the town with fellow translators, or when I'm staying in a ryokan.
Plebeian Japanese food is so wonderful that I can easily subsist on it for days at a time.
