I've never done this (despite umpteen rentals and 12 years of living together) and have always shelled out for the extra driver. Before I make a scene at Avis next time, can someone confirm that I have read this right, and that most - if not all - car rental firms will allow my other half to drive without charging more. We have drivers' licenses which show that we share the same address, which will probably help.
My preferred renter is Avis, because of their ties to BA... any differences experienced in US rentals compared to those in Europe (esp. France)?

here in CA all the car rental firms I use (Dollar, Avis, Nat'l Hertz) allow DP's w/ out charge because CA itself recognizes DP's.
