I took the ferry from Harwich a while ago and what appeared to be a plain clothes policeman sitting in a chair after the "security" checkpoint wanted my passport. He didn't have a computer or a passport scanner, and he didn't show me his badge but it said "Essex Police" on it. He spent 3 minutes flipping through it although at the time it was completely blank.
