I wasn't aware AS flew NRT-LAX/SEA.

And this is a question of upgrading using instruments or miles, not a reroute for a mechanical (which is kind of a completely different scenario, of course the airline is going to allow reroutes that might allow for long stays at connection points if it solves the customer service problem).

My suspicion is that AS is enforcing a four hour restriction for connections on the domestic segment in order to use a single upgrade, especially given that there are flights available same-day. Apparently if OP wants to use a single instrument for the upgrade, they need to use the same-day flights, or they need to escalate with AS customer service.
