I've gotten the mobile pass in the air before.

Also for short flights, consider the 30 min pass for $5 or $6. I'll often download emails via hotspot or airport Wi-Fi before departure, work offline on reading, replies, whatever, and then use the 30-min pass for a send/receive session while I'm doing other things that require a live connection. Then when the pass expires I have a new batch of email to read/respond/ignore. Often that's enough to keep me productive for a full 2.5 hr (gate to gate) flight.
