If you fly first/business using miles, don't expect to continue that if you worked for UA or LH because it may be frowned upon. You also may get to fly standby, etc but not earn miles on those flights.
My husband was corporate management for United for about 7 years. There's nothing that says you can't use your own miles for personal travel. In fact he was given the option to take part of his bonus in miles. I can't say much about what it was like there, since I'm not the one who worked there. I can say it got much more stressful for him after the merger. I will say the travel perks were nice, and extended to spouses which was great.
