Both options have positives and negatives. If you have the time I would recommend a steady drive perhaps with a night's stop along the way. There's some great desert scenery along the way - and as far as I'm aware its the only place in the world you'll see Joshua Trees!
We flew into LAS and out of SFO last year and spent a week driving between the two, via a night visiting a friend in LAX. It was very enjoyable.
Unfortunately we are only away for 1 week in total, planning Sunday (night) to Thursday (morning) in LAS and then travel to LA on Thursday and be there until Sunday evening.
The trouble with car hire is that I assume we pretty much don't need it apart from airport transfers and LAS-LAX so it is quite a lot of wasted money
