Not sure about waitlisted but I've had "Not Confirmed" with an award upgrade pending before.
I'd called to check award availability, and there wasn't any. The Priority Services call agent said she would check with Doha if they could open award inventory for me. She created a new "Not Confirmed" reservation for me (so I then had one confirmed in Economy and another not confirmed in Business for the same flight under the same PNR). The upgrade was confirmed the next day and the Business reservation changed to "Confirmed" and etickets were reissued. The old Economy reservation was removed so just the upgraded one remained.
Perhaps similar is happening behind the scenes with your upgrade request. Good luck! ^
