I used a Regional Premiere Upgrade to get them in First Class from SFO to MCI. The plane has taken off and the upgrade list still shows them in their respective First Class seats. If they didn't board the plane, wouldn't that have changed to some other person who got upgraded to their seats?
Top Tip, if your in-laws are elderly and/or have trouble walking long distances you can request a wheelchair for them. The wheelchair service is a blessing to folks who don't speak English as the wheelchair guy will take them through customs/security/etc all the way to the correct gate... basically an adult version of unaccompanied minors.
