No dummy booking, just search the segment (recent searches) and check the fare buckets. My preference over paying $5 a month.
Meanwhile, right after you check, UA releases a saver award. Somebody else grabs it before you login the next morning to check. That's why you pay for something like EF for alerts. Checking once a day isn't enough.
For clarity, I'm not knocking what you do - I actually do the same because of the small chance that IN (which EF can't check) is >0 while I=0.
