It looks like the only option is anytime awards, but the dates I am looking at are probably 250k for business and 300k for first each way. Is there a better option than blowing 1.2m miles for a trip for two?

In addition to C, AA has also been releasing U and Z space at t-24. For example I checked yesterday afternoon and there were 4 Z awards for last night's flight available. I'd suggest getting an EF sub and setting alerts. If you don't find sAAver seats, it's a much easier than expected upgrade these days.
QF also does release premium awards. Again, set EF alerts. They're rare and hard to find, but they do exist.
