It looks like the only option is anytime awards, but the dates I am looking at are probably 250k for business and 300k for first each way. Is there a better option than blowing 1.2m miles for a trip for two?
PHX -> SYD BTW.
There's another thread in this forum about upgrades and waitlists on AA 73/72 See

The pattern I've seen on Expert Flyer is lots of upgrades and award space for business appearing (C0 -> C7) in the last few days before flights with many people reporting their upgrades (SWU and miles+copay) clearing. I have a coach trip scheduled for Aug 2016 and I'm now fairly confident that my miles+copy upgrades will clear.
I had been finding a reasonable number of saver awards on this route before the recent devaluation and I think a lot of people with miles grabbed a lot of the award spots before the higher miles levels kicked in last March 22. I expect to see more availability on saver awards showing up for trips beginning 330 days after March 22, 2016. This suggests we should expect to see saver availability improving for trips after Feb 15, 2017. Time will tell.
