Gate checked bags are never delivered to the destination gate. The OP may be thinking of "valet checking" as done on regional jets, which is an entirely different practice (and not applicable to any mainline flights).
AA mainline does do limited valet checking. On domestic flights, gate-checked bags for first class passengers are to be returned to the passenger at the arrival gate.
