Showed up, was given class I (Chrysler 300) but with no rate change. I actually needed the SUV for a trip to lake house on winding mountain roads and this was a meaningful inconvenience for me. The rental office took off $40 total from the reservation when I insisted on a discount but had no SUVs for me, luxury or otherwise, because apparently they get all their cars from the EWR airport office.

Seems like I'm a sucker for this doing this Amex Plat Prepaid rate, which usually comes with a great discount but also a cancellation penalty. So I have to pay a penalty but they can bait and switch me down to an entirely different class and category of car with no rate change? Well, I learned my lesson in time to cancel the rest of my summer reservations with Hertz at least.
